Like planning your own vacation, your pet's journey requires a bit of preparation ahead of time. Sky Paws is here to navigate! Here's what you need to know for your pet's upcoming trip:
Crate or Carrier—
For your pet’s safety and comfort, they must travel in a size-appropriate crate that allows them to stand and turn around comfortably. Pets in the cabin can travel in soft (fabric) carriers or hard (plastic or metal) crates as long as they fit under the seat. Sky Paws will provide the right soft carrier for your pet’s trip.
Pets traveling in the cargo hold must be in a hard plastic or metal crate that meets a number of standards based on International Air Transport Association requirements. Crates designed for airline travel often differ from crates for sleeping or training. Sky Paws will go over this with you well in advance of your pet’s travel.
Crate Training—
The number-one thing you can do to ensure your pet’s comfort en route is getting them used to being in a crate or carrier. Many pets find the secure surroundings of a crate comforting, but others find it scary at first. The American Kennel Club has great tips on introducing your pet to a crate. The more time you have to acquaint them with a crate or carrier before their trip, the better.
Food and Comfort Items—
We travel with water, a small amount of your pet's food, and a collar and leash for exercise time before and after your pet’s flight. We’ll also coordinate with you to include a special toy or other comfort items to make their journey more soothing.
Documentation—
Your pet will need a visit to the vet before travel. For trips within the U.S., Sky Paws requires a Health Certificate from your veterinarian within 10 days of travel confirming that your pet is healthy for travel and is up-to-date on all vaccinations.
Sky Paws doesn’t need other documents for travel within the U.S., but we’ll be happy to transport them along with your pet. At your request, we can also verify a pet’s microchip number at no additional charge.
For international trips, entry requirements vary by country; please contact us directly to determine what’s needed.
Weather—
To keep your pet safe, airlines place seasonal restrictions on pet travel in the cargo hold and will not ship pets during extreme hot or cold weather. Sky Paws will coordinate with you in the event of a weather restriction.
